KOTA KINABALU, MALAYSIAN BORNEO
Total monthly budget: $850 per person (3,833 ringgits)
A small city that focuses on living outdoors and around water, Kota Kinabalu boasts a growing expat community, with abundant activities such as boating, diving and snorkeling. It’s peaceful coastal living at a bargain.
SANTA FAMILIA, CAYO, BELIZE
Total monthly budget: $1,200 per person (2,397.50 Belize dollars)
Embrace fresh air and plenty of sunshine on the cheap in Cayo, a district in western Belize. Pictured here is Burns Avenue in the town of San Ignacio, but for a truly inexpensive paradise, Peddicord recommends the small village of Santa Familia. There, neighbors are friendly and it’s easy to disconnect (though, admittedly, that’s partly because a consistently strong Internet signal is hard to come by).
Total monthly budget: $1,225 per person (35,945 córdobas)
A photogenic locale with Instagram-worthy moments around every corner, Nicaragua is one of the oldest cities in Latin America. Soak up the sights of cobblestoned streets and colorful cathedrals — set against a beautiful landscape with mountains, a volcano and a lake.
LAS TERRENAS, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Total monthly budget: $1,250 per person (58,472.50 Dominican pesos)
This diverse town with Italian, French and Dominican influences was once a fishing village but can now be considered a cosmopolitan hotspot. Plus, as one of the best values in the Caribbean for living, Las Terrenas’ infrastructure is improving and it is easy to become a resident there.
POBLADO, MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA
Total monthly budget: $1,650 per person (4,760,000 Colombian pesos)
Nestled in the beautiful Colombian mountains, El Poblado is a culturally rich neighborhood in the center of Medellín. City residents are welcoming, the culture is what Peddicord describes as “Euro chic,” and because of the exchange rate to Colombian pesos, expats can live luxuriously for a low cost.
CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
Total monthly budget: $1,000 per person (36,380 Thai baht)
Though it does attract a good number of visitors, Chiang Mai in northern Thailand embraces the relaxed life. Health care, in particular, is a fantastic value in the city — you can see an English-speaking doctor for just $20. Explore Buddhist temples along with mega-malls and multi-national grocery stores in the same town.
